Dynamic Optical Layer
The unprecedented volume of high-bandwidth video and data-driven content—combined with a tremendous increase in the use of mobile broadband applications—has created an inflection point for network operators. Traffic is exploding across the network with the metro network serving as the hub for the creation, deployment, and delivery of wholesale, retail and business services. This shift, away from being the on-ramp to the core to being the central point where value is created and delivered, has generated a number of challenges for service providers.
As service providers increase their metro network capacity to support this traffic, they are challenged by a lack of agility and capabilities within their metropolitan networks to operationally simplify the delivery of Ethernet and wavelength services, video, and Over-the-Top high bandwidth content.
BTI’s Dynamic Optical Layer combines reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing, reach extension and end-to-end service-centric and path-centric management capabilities to provide network operators with what they need -- simplified operations and enhanced automation. This “touchless” and modular architecture is designed to simplify the design, installation operation and optimization of agile metro service delivery networks.

Building a High-Value Service Delivery Network
BTI takes a fully integrated, systems-centric approach with a solution that automatically discovers adjacent nodes and shares information between reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) and reach-extension elements to set power levels, compute span loss and provide autonomous monitoring and channel power-level rebalancing network-wide.
BTI’s Dynamic optical layer in conjunction with a service-centric management simplifies provisioning, monitoring, and ongoing operations as well support future capacity requirements and wavelength plans of up to 80 channels.
The Dynamic Optical Layers’ automation simplifies provisioning and—eliminating hands-on effort—expedites service delivery. Automated capabilities ensure the services are always tuned and performing at their optimum levels. Network operators can now reset how services were previously routed and de-fragment the network with an automated, all-optical service delivery foundation.
Eliminating the Constraints of the Fixed Optical Layer
By being the first to market with 4th generation ROADM technology, BTI has purposely designed the solution for metro aggregation and further improved the capabilities and deployment scope of ROADMs within agile metro service delivery networks. BTI is enabling service providers to create an agile metro infrastructure that will grow into the future without hampering their ability to deliver services.
Key Dynamic Optical Layer Features
The Dynamic Optical Layer consists of ROADM-on-a-Blade (ROB) modules for flexible, point-and-click wavelength routing and DWDM Line Amplifier (DLA) modules for reach extension in extremely compact form factors. An Intelligent Control System—integrated on both modular elements—enables plug-and-play operation to simplify the planning, deployment, service provisioning, ongoing optimization and power management of the network.

These elements combine, as the system-oriented foundation of a packet optical service delivery network, to support a full-40 wavelength (400 Gbps) system capacity and offer “any-wavelength anywhere” add/drop access, automated network equalization and per-channel performance monitoring metrics. Key Dynamic Optical Layer capabilities of the BTI 7000 Series include:
4th Generation Technology
Network operators can leverage recent ROADM technology innovations and efficiencies to benefit from an extremely flexible—and future-proof—packet optical service delivery network foundation.
System-Oriented Approach
An Intelligent control system consolidates per-wavelength performance across the entire system, simplifying planning, provisioning and on-going optimization and power management via automated capabilities.
Optimized for Metro Aggregation
Benefit from next-generation component technology innovation and efficiencies. The elements provide a compact form factor to fit into precious rack space and allow elements to be combined with service modules to simplify wiring and limit configuration errors. Cost-optimization enables deployment closer to the network edge where reconfigurability and access to all channels is extremely important.
Secure Investment
Dynamic Optical Layer solutions from BTI guarantee the network will adapt and grow rather than necessitate a forklift upgrade. By implementing a solution with gridless capabilities today, service delivery networks are future-proofed and offer extremely flexible bandwidth capacity. Gridless technology enables network operators to accommodate forthcoming 400 Gbps or 1 Tbps transmissions that require a wider channel width than current ITU standards call for—and can do so alongside 10 Gbps and 40/100 Gbps services without wasting spectrum.
Zero Channel Turn-Up
Enables element auto-discovery, sharing of span information and automated setting of power levels, ensuring that the network is ready to serve before a service is deployed.
