BTI announces ultra-compact Dispersion Compensation Modules as options for its integrated Optical Link System

Ottawa, Canada—Thursday, August 22, 2002 // BTI, an emerging leader in optical link transport systems, today announced the rollout of a new generation of Dispersion Compensation Modules (DCM) that offer the most compact footprint of any readily deployable DCMs on the market. Critical to the company's vision for fully integrated and modular subsystems that work at the optical link layer, BTI's new DCMs will take full advantage of the Optical Link System's flexible architecture to effectively address expanding dispersion compensation requirements in optical networks. System Vendors can now offer more intelligent and economical optical transport link capabilities with BTI's OLS for total impairment compensation solutions that integrate seamlessly into their network product offerings and lower their system costs.

The introduction of these next generation DCMs for the OLS is another step forward in providing System Vendors with all the critical transport elements required for links, seamlessly integrated together into a complete and future-proof infrastructure. As optical links in Metro Regional applications continue to extend in reach, dispersion management is becoming increasingly important, but until now, managing dispersion within a link required bulky, discrete, and expensive, fiber-based DCMs. At Optical Add/Drop nodes where branching networks are supported, adding DCMs often resulted in the deployment of a new equipment bay. By designing an ultra-compact DCM circuit pack for flexible implementation within the OLS, BTI substantially extends the reach of System Vendor's current product lines and provides a cost-effective solution for dispersion compensation within new or existing networks.

BTI's OLS is an intelligent and complete link extension system, controlled by the System Vendor's network management system (NMS), and delivered as a network-ready, Carrier-grade subsystem. The OLS is exceptionally compact and completely scalable, with a modular, plug & play structure that allows for flexible deployment of optional amplification, signal conditioning and performance monitoring circuit packs as required. Each single shelf (2 RU size) OLS unit has six circuit pack slots to hold one system control processor module and five optical modules in any combination.

BTI's Optical Link System now offers ultra-compact DCM

Up to three additional extension OLS shelves can be connected to the first and controlled by its system control processor, to offer six additional optical circuit pack slots each. BTI's new DCMs will use a single slot within an OLS chassis, offer seamless integration with other OLS modules (e.g. EDFAs, Gain Equalization, Optical Channel Performance Monitor, etc.), and benefit from the existing OLS communication and management system.
