Seen and Heard at the Content Delivery Summit

Last week, Gary Southwell, one of the technology guru’s at BTI Systems was a panelist at the Content Delivery Summit in New York City and spent a great deal of time speaking to service providers and content providers alike and listening as they discussed their plans for their networks and content and how to ensure that the customer is always getting a quality viewing experience.

The main topic on everyone minds this year, was the increasing amount of Netflix content that is swamping networks and how to deal with it – even the Netflix folks are interested in the solution as well. The big buzz though was transparent caching — What is a transparent cache and how it different from a transparent proxy cache and how can it help me? Once operators understand the value of true transparent caching is around the lowest TCO and the simplest to implement with the least risk, it was easy to work through the business case.

Our discussion around transparent caching and Netflix created quite a stir when it was explained how Netflix content is delivered — Netflix content is actually a series of two second objects that a transparent cache like BTI’s WideCast can cache and then provide a seamless viewing experience for the consumer. Simply put, the service provider does not have to add extensively to their bandwidth, the consumer gets the video they want quickly and seamlessly and everyone is happy. We call it Win-Win-Win for Consumer – Service Provider – Content Provider.

As more content floods networks and more subscribers sign up for Netflix, a transparent caching solution will be the ultimate win/win/win for the consumer, the service provider, and Netflix alike. To find out more about transparent caching, what it is and how it works and what it can mean to networks, we’ve recently released a new white paper on the topic.

The Content Delivery Summit, hosted by Dan Rayburn brought together telecom carriers, service providers, content owners, and industry vendors for a detailed look at CDN platforms and the delivery of video and rich-media content and the panel sessions and keynotes provided great insight into what is on the minds of everyone as they deal with the glut of content pouring onto their networks. This was an intense, information filled one-day event and BTI Systems was proud to Sponsor this high quality event this year. Well done Dan!
