After a sunny week in San Francisco at this year’s Gigaom Structure event, a few consistent themes came through. One being security, or rather trust. Following a year of Snowden, Heartbleed, Target etc…, it’s clear that trust is a fundamental pre-requisite of being in the cloud business for all of us – from providers to infrastructure vendors. But trust still won’t persuade top retail chains like Walmart to move their cloud business to the likes of AWS, opening up opportunities for fresh, young, nimble cloud providers like Joyent to carve out a nice business. (And yes, Bryan Cantrill, CTO of Joyent, was a wonderful, charismatic and entertaining presenter).
